SEPTEMBER — NEW BEGINNINGS

A September Reflection Series

September has a way of making us pause.

The carefree days of summer begin to fade. The air changes. The days become a little shorter. Children return to school, routines resume, and somehow September feels like a quiet invitation to begin again.

But perhaps September is not only about returning to old routines.

Perhaps it is about asking ourselves:

What would I like to begin?

A new habit?
A new friendship?
A new adventure?
A new way of thinking?
A new relationship with ourselves?

New beginnings don't always arrive with fireworks. Sometimes they arrive quietly, with a decision, a conversation, a first step, or simply the realization that we are ready for something different.

And here's something important to remember:

Beginning again does not mean starting from nothing.

We begin again with everything life has already taught us.

Our experiences have shaped us. Our disappointments have taught us. Our successes have strengthened us. Our mistakes have given us wisdom. Even the seasons that broke our hearts may have revealed a strength we didn't know we possessed.

So, this September, perhaps we don't need to reinvent ourselves.

Perhaps we simply need to rediscover ourselves.

Week One: A New Season, A New Perspective

September is often associated with change, but change doesn't have to be frightening.

Sometimes change is simply an opportunity to see our lives through a different lens.

Instead of asking, “What did I lose?” perhaps we can ask, “What did I learn?”

Instead of “Why didn't things work out?” perhaps we can ask, “Where might this new direction lead me?”

Perspective can change everything.

The same road can look very different when we are no longer traveling it with yesterday's expectations.

September Reflection:
What is one situation in your life that you could look at differently?

Week Two: Making Room for Something New

Before something new can enter our lives, sometimes we have to make room for it.

That may mean cleaning out a closet, clearing our calendar, ending an unhealthy habit, or releasing an old emotional burden.

We sometimes hold onto things simply because they are familiar.

Being familiar doesn't always mean healthy.

There are relationships, expectations, disappointments, fears, and even old versions of ourselves that may have served a purpose once but no longer belong in the life we are creating.

Letting go doesn't erase our history.

It simply means we are no longer allowing yesterday to take up all the space needed for tomorrow.

September Reflection:
What is taking up emotional or mental space in your life that you are ready to release?

Week Three: It's Never Too Late

There is a dangerous little sentence that can quietly limit our lives:

“I'm too old.”

Too old to learn something new.
Too old to make new friends.
Too old to travel.
Too old to fall in love.
Too old to write the book.
Too old to go back to school.
Too old to start over.

But who made that rule?

Life does not come with an expiration date on dreams.

Your next chapter may look completely different from the chapter you imagined years ago, and that's okay.

Maybe the dream has changed.

Maybe you have changed.

That doesn't mean the dream is gone.

Sometimes growing older gives us something youth cannot always provide: clarity.

We know more about what matters. We know what we will no longer tolerate. We understand ourselves better.

And that knowledge can make a new beginning even more meaningful.

September Reflection:
What is something you've always wanted to do but keep telling yourself you are “too old” to do?

Week Four: Make Room for You

Many of us become very good at making room for everyone else.

We make room for family.

We make room for friends.

We make room for work.

We make room for responsibilities.

We make room for everyone who needs something from us.

But somewhere along the way, we may forget to make room for ourselves.

Taking care of yourself is not selfish.

Resting is not selfish.

Laughing is not selfish.

Having interests of your own is not selfish.

Saying “no” when necessary is not selfish.

Choosing peace is not selfish.

You deserve a place on your own list of priorities.

Perhaps this September, your new beginning can be as simple as asking:

“What do I need?”

And then giving yourself permission to listen to the answer.

September Challenge: Begin Again

Before September ends, choose one small thing you've been putting off.

Call someone you've been meaning to call.

Read the book.

Take the walk.

Try the recipe.

Write the first page.

Take the class.

Visit the place.

Start the hobby.

Forgive yourself.

Set the boundary.

Rest.

Or simply give yourself permission to dream again.

Don't worry about changing your entire life in one month.

One small beginning can eventually lead to a very different destination.

September reminds us that endings and beginnings often exist together.

Summer ends, and autumn begins.

One chapter closes, and another waits.

And perhaps your next chapter doesn't require a completely new life.

Perhaps it simply requires a little more room for the life you truly want to live.

SEPTEMBER REMINDER

Begin where you are.
Use what you've learned.
Release what no longer serves you.
Make room for what brings you joy.
And don't forget to make room for yourself.

“There is nothing selfish about making room for yourself in your own life.”

a quote from Zee- “Take Care-Be Well.”
